1. The initial focus of Iain's Trust was to prevent another accident like that which killed Iain, by pressurising car manufacturers to modify car design. Read of our success, in July 2009, in getting assurances from all major manufacturers that a secondary safety device will be fitted to all new models.
  2. We are aware of at least a dozen other incidences where children have started cars, without fatal consequences. But with only hazy and anecdotal evidence of the scale of the problem it is difficult to pressure decision-making bodies to change laws regarding car design, or even help with publicising the issue among parents. So Iain's Trust has funded an online survey conducted by RoSPA to establish the frequency of children starting cars as well as other aspects of safety of children around vehicles. This closed on the 5th January 2010 and the results will be available shortly.
  3. The next aim of Iain's Trust was to publish a leaflet on children around cars, highlighting the possibility of accidental starting, addressing the issue of manoevering vehicles in driveways and giving a suggestion for safe storage of keys. This has now happened! We have a superb leaflet thanks to Velocity Design, Inverness for producing a striking and informative leaflet.
  4. As well as taking an active role in the promotion of car safety issues, Iain’s Trust will donate a proportion of the money raised each year to other charities with similar aims. And the fund will not be restricted to issues surrounding young children and domestic circumstances; at some point Iain’s Trust may support wider road safety campaigns, for example those aimed at young and inexperienced drivers.
